About SchoolMap

SchoolMap is a free, public resource for exploring U.S. K–12 school and district data. We make federal education data easy to search, visualize, and understand.

What we provide

Every public school district and school in the United States is represented, with data on enrollment, demographics, grade levels, contact information, and — where available — academic performance scores and ratings.

The interactive map lets you explore districts geographically, filter by population, gender ratios, low-income rates, and performance ratings. Clicking any district or school opens a detail page with the full picture.

How ratings work

Ratings are calculated on a 0–10 scale based on California SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) scores for Math and ELA (English Language Arts). Schools and districts are ranked relative to each other using percentile scoring — the top 10% earn a 10.0 rating, the bottom 10% earn a 1.0, and the rest are distributed in between.

9–10 Excellent — top 10% statewide
7–8 Above average
5–6 Average
1–4 Below average

Only schools and districts with at least 100 tested students are rated. Schools are ranked against other schools; districts against other districts.
